This is an app for smartphones that allows users of a gate at the entrance of premises to be opened and closed.

We developed it for several reasons because :

  • we didn't want to give a remote control to many people who need (sometimes temporarily) access to the premises.
  • we didn't want to give a username and password with access to our LAN
  • we didn't want it to work if people are not in front of the gate
  • granting access and removing it has to be simple
  • the user should be clearly identified
  • it must work with any smartphone available on the market
  • it should be safe with respect to software hacking / intrusion

With these objectives in mind, we developed an app for Android and a web page with the same look-and-feel so that any browser can be used.

Actually the basics are working, but we're further investigating in a secure and unique user identification. We don't want to work with a login, no username and password because this can be just given to anybody else, it must be linked to the physical smartphone, but mac address cannot be used for this because it is not a unique idetifier on smartphones anymore (although it would have been secure enough for our purpose).

It works by walking close to the gate, there the smartphone is automatically sensed and checked against a list of allowable phones, the user starts the app or the browser and clicks the button to operate the gate, as simple as that. Even if the app or the url has been given to another phone, then there will be no action because it has not been recognised in the list of allowable phones.
