The Velbus system is based on the CANbus (Controller Area Network bus) protocol to communicate between its components.

This is an excellent choice as you'll read in the following paragraphs, and it allows at the same time for a bus cable topology which is extremely versatile and tolerant, without any restrictions on how to link the different components such as switches, sensors, relays, dimmers etc.

One can connect the components by wiring the bus linearly, in star, in loop and any combination. This is a tremendous facility when routing your bus cable through the building because you have no restrictions, just take the route that suits you the most and it'll work. We just recommend to use the quality EIB cable because of its mechanical and electrical properties and stick to use always the same conductor color for the H and L line (strongly avoid using UTP/FTP/Ethernet cable as a bus cable if you want peace of mind) and you'll avoid a lot of cable troubleshooting.

CANbus is a proven communication protocol used in automobiles, industrial automation, and other systems to allow devices to communicate with each other. CANbus is considered to be a reliable communication protocol because it is designed to be robust and tolerant to failures.

One of the key features of CANbus is its ability to handle a high number of nodes (devices) on the network and still maintain a high level of availability. It uses a robust, fault-tolerant, and deterministic communication protocol, which means that it can handle errors and continue to operate even in the event of a failure.

Additionally, the CANbus protocol uses a unique message-based system, where each device on the network can send and receive messages, which allows for more efficient communication between devices.

Another important aspect of the reliability of the CANbus protocol is its ability to handle errors and recover quickly. The protocol includes several mechanisms such as error detection and error recovery.
